England first up at home for France was always going to be real litmus test to determine if they’d finally shown some improvement under Phillip Saint-Andre’s coaching, and the Paris faithful weren’t disappointed as their side took the victory in a pulsating match at the Stade de France. It was the ideal way to start 2014 after last year’s disastrous set of results, a run which would have cost many-a-coach their position. However Saint-Andre survived and his stock will have gone up a notch after victory over their great rivals England.
Italy showed several glimpses of the more attacking style that coach Jaques Brunel has been trying to bring into his teams performances, with a brace of tries against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday. They secured a famous win over Les Bleus in Rome last season and unfortunately for them the French will be looking to put that result to the distant past and may be aiming for a bit of payback on Sunday. Away matches have long been their achillies heal and two on the road in succession will test their resolve. But an 8 point loss to the defending champions on their home patch can be viewed as a good start for Italy, and they’ll go to Paris with an attacking mindset this weekend.
